Delirium increases the complication and mortality rates, as well as the duration of mechanical ventilation and also often leaves long-term consequences. This systematic review therefore examines the effectiveness of different approaches of a non-pharmacological prevention of delirium in the intensive care unit. To identify studies, a comprehensive search was carried out in the databases Cochrane, CINAHL and PubMed. A total of 24 randomized and nonrandomized controlled trials with a total of 3,303 patients examining eight different interventions were identified. Above all, intensive early mobilization, early occupational therapy, involvement of relatives in prevention and intervention bundles proved to be effective.
